Hey Kanata Home Owners!
I know this has been a question that has been on many of our minds – What is going on with the Kanata Golf and Country Club redevelopment?
For those of you who are not aware, the owner of Kanata’s Golf and Country Club wants to replace the 18-hole course with housing and has joined with ClubLink and two developers, Richcraft Homes and Minto Communities to redesign the property.
We know that this is a big concern to most of Kanata’s current and potential future residents in Kanata. Kanata North’s new city councillor, Jenna Sudds, is very aware of this, as she has been receiving countless messages from concerned residents who fear they will lose the green space and that property values will drop. Sudds is on Kanata residents’ sides and has been meeting with staff to get more information on the 1981 agreement between the former City of Kanata and Campeau Corporation. This agreement could be the resource that we need to keep the golf course intact, as it promised to protect 40 per cent of the area for green space, which is already mainly taken up by the golf course.
Other key individuals are also voicing their concerns and making a stance for the Kanata Golf and Country Club. Mayor Jim Watson is committed to work to protect the green space and believes that redeveloping it would be a business decision that would negatively impact the surrounding communities. Neil Thomson, president of the Kanata Beaverbrook Community Association, is also against this and said ‘that the community will hire its own lawyers and planners, if needs be.’
It isn’t the first time ClubLink has set a controversial redevelopment; they did have plans to redevelop Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ontario, but the community saved it by creating a conservation plan in place. So here is to hoping that history will repeat itself once again and that Kanata Golf and Country Club will remain at peace and to be enjoyed among many for years to come!
ClubLink and the developers will be setting a meeting with the community residents to work on plans for the redevelopment. We will inform you in future posts about any updates we hear of, so stay tuned in!
